Does Cloth Diaper leads to early Potty Trained Child?

Posted by sayangkucomel at 11:08 AM 0 comments
Many Cloth Diaper websites have mentioned that Cloth Diapered babies tend to be potty trained earlier than normal. Is this really true? How early is early?

Personally, I don't think this is always true. I heard of babies potty-trained early without the use of Cloth Diapers. My son started potty trained at the age of 1 year 11 months..close to 2 years. By that time he can signaled that he wanted to pee. But to be cautious, we would always ask him afraid that he might forget until he was a bit older. He was not using cloth diapers at that time. When he sleeps, we would put him in disposables and when he's awake, he'll only wear shorts. Although he was potty trained, we still put him diapers when he sleeps because we were afraid of urine leaks. And as he gets older, he drank more therefore we always used those thick expensive diaper (mamy poko) so that it last longer at night.

I only came across the new pocket cloth diapers when he was 2 years 6 months. After discovering the cloth diapers, we stopped buying disposables for him and used cloth diapers (CD) each time when he sleeps. I tried sewing a potty training pants/brief for him, but he mistook that for a diaper. So, he accidentally pee in it. Due to this, i didn't put on any potty training pants on him. When he was 2 years 11 months i decided to stop using diapers on him completely just because i thought it's time he learn not to use diapers when going to sleep. I tried asking for advice on how to completely potty trained when child is sleeping, but didn't get any good and satisfying answers. With that, in the middle of the night or before he goes to sleep I will bring him to the toilet to pee. I should have done this earlier since he started potty training earlier, but i guess i was just too lazy. :)

Because of this, i don't think if your baby is using CD it will always lead to the baby being potty trained early. Most of it comes from the parents. Even without using cloth diapers, the baby can be trained earlier and vice versa. But there are also cases where the CD do contribute to potty training.

How much can you save?

Posted by sayangkucomel at 10:37 AM 0 comments
This is a chart comparing the amount of money mothers spend on disposables and how much they can save if they 'invest' in using cloth diapers. I am using RM0.50 for each disposable diaper where in actual reality, there are disposables which are more expensive that can cost RM1.00 or more for each piece (example: mamy poko). So, if you're using one of those branded diapers, the cost for each diaper is sure more than RM0.50, which means you will save more than what is stated in the chart below. (The price shown below is in RM)

As you see, cloth diapers are reusable and long lasting. The only types that doesn't last too long is those sold in the department store or supermarket, where they are made of plastic-like material that can easily tear after many use (read my old entry- Cheap diaper solution during the day). But of course, this version is cheaper than the one that i sell (Freshbots and Fuzzi bunz). That is why buying these long lasting diapers are considered and investment because for the first time, it's considered expensive. But since you're buying it once, after some time, you will see the return on investment (the saving that you achieve from NOT buying the disposables).

Too Expensive To BUY??

Posted by sayangkucomel at 7:25 PM 0 comments
Do you think that these diapers are too expensive? You are interested in trying them but are not sure if it suits your baby well??

Here is then your chance to rent the diapers for RM 7/week for the first week and RM 5/week for the subsequent week.

The main objective of you renting them is so that you can actually 'test' the diapers with your child first so that you know for sure that it is going to be useful after you buy them. It would be such a waste of money if you did pay the full price of the diaper but found out that you don't like using them.

If you are interested with this option, do email me at sayangkucomel@gmail.com. I will then send you the terms & conditions.

The different type of diaper enclosures

Posted by sayangkucomel at 12:34 PM 0 comments
There are many diaper brands sold in the market. Most of them are sold online in Malaysia. Although there are many types, their designs don't differ that much. One thing to note is that the different design of these diapers enclosure and by diapers in here, i'm referring to the non-traditional type which are much like disposables' shape. So here are the types that i've come to know:

1) Velcro:

This is much like the style of disposables. Easy to put on the baby. These velcros are normally the strong typed that is durable. They stick even after frequent use. However, there might be other diaper brands which uses a non-durable type of velcro which a lot of customers might face problem with. But so far, i've seen and used Happy Heiny's, Drybees and Freshbots and their velcro are strong!

However, although this type is easy to put on the baby, it is also easy for the baby to undo it. Just put it this way, your baby is smart. After a few times using it she will also try to play with the velcro. My daughter does it too! That's why i wear her pants / skirts so she doesn't have the direct access to the diaper she's wearing.

2) Snap:

This is used in Fuzzibunz. You snap them shut or you open them back, like a push button. So far, I've found 2 different types of snap designs, namely one on Fuzzibunz and the other on Green Acre Design (GAD) diapers. These designs are trimmer than the velcro typed. Although both Fuzzibunz and GAD uses snaps, their different designs make them unique in their own way. The snaps in Fuzzibunz are designed such that you can control the size of the baby's waist and also the baby's leg casings. This is not something that GAD can do much.

Although most people think that using Snap would be difficult on your impatient baby, i think it's not that bad. You can snap the top row first, then the baby can be standing/sitting to have the second row adjusted and snapped. With snap, it is harder for your baby to undo them.

Fuzzi Bunz Pocket Diaper

GAD Pocket Diaper

3) Hook:

I have not used this, although i do have one in stock (Wahmies OS). It looks so complicated to be used, what's more with the instruction. But, i think by examining its details, it shouldn't be that hard to use. But, in my opinion, it is more difficult than using snaps. This type is trimmer than other diaper enclosures. That's what 'they' say but i've not tried it. I do believe that it might be true because by comparing it with other diapers, their size are a bit smaller/compact than others with different enclosure types. You may get this type of diaper, specifically Wahmies OS from miabambina.com or ezmotherhood.com (Online Malaysia Retailers).

Cheap diaper solution during the day

Posted by sayangkucomel at 4:23 PM 0 comments
This is what I used for my 9 months daughter during the day:

Traditional squared lampin + diaper cover sold in dept. stores (carrefour, testco, anakku, parkson, etc.)

RM 2.70 per lampin + RM 8 for Pureen S-sized cover

This can only last for 3-4 hours for my baby since the lampin isn't that very absorbent compared to terrycloth insert/soaker.

The cover comes in different sizes with prices ranging from RM 7 - RM 15 depending on the brand. Available brands that i've seen so far are: Anakku, Pureen, Kiko

This cover also has pocket covered with net-typed fabric. It's best you use diaper liner with these because or else it's hard to remove the stain from babies poop.

But do take note that this cover doesn't last too long. After using it everyday, the plastic that covers the inner side of the diaper can tear easily at the stitch line. I've been using them for 3 months + and this happened recently. However, i still use them as the tear isn't that long.

My daughter wearing the diaper type above:

How easy it is to wash these pocket diapers!

Posted by sayangkucomel at 4:16 PM 0 comments

· Throw any solid waste (if any) into toilet bowl

· Fold the cloth diaper and keep it in a dry/wet pail

· When it is time to wash, pull out the inserts, then just put the diaper and insert into the washing machine. Avoid using fabric softener or bleach or detergent with enzymes.

· You can dry them in a dryer or on a clothesline under the bright warm sun

The inner material of the pocket diapers are made of stain-resistant fabrics (suedecloth / fleece). It is easy to get rid of baby's waste without having to do any hard scrubbing

Baby Signs Malaysia

Posted by sayangkucomel at 3:47 PM 1 comments
Was referred to this from someone else. Thought that it was interesting to try after reading through their webpage, but the place is in KL. Quite far. Here's some excerpt from their page:

"Some of you may be new to the idea of teaching babies signs or gestures before they talk and still others may not even believe that babies can actually do this. However, with the Baby Signs® Program, you too can enjoy the benefits of early communication with your little one. We offer a variety of Classes and Products to fit your needs and offer the support and guidance you need to successfully communicate with your baby. The purpose of the Baby Signs® Program is to provide educational programs and resources to promote public awareness of the benefits of using the Baby Signs® Program program with infants and toddlers.

So stop wondering what your baby is thinking and start working towards opening the doors of communication and join the thousands of parents around the world who are discovering the Baby Signs® Program - The World's Leading Sign Language Program for Babies!"

It would be a good time to start this with Husna since she is still a baby.

My Cloth Diapering Experience

Posted by sayangkucomel at 6:11 PM 0 comments
It started with my second child, Husna. I had used the traditional lampin (square white cloth diaper) since she was a baby and was happy with it. Despite the washing and folding, I had my helper/maid to help out with the chore. Although Husna was cloth diapered, her big brother who was at that time 2 yrs old was in dispos (disposable diaper). He was potty trained but occasionally uses diapers when he sleeps be it during day time or at night. That was the reason why I opted for cloth diaper for Husna or else I would be spending too many on diapers alone on a monthly basis.

However, after Husna got bigger, i found that the traditional lampin was quite small for her. Furthermore, at that time I was using it in such a way that i would fold it into triangles and cover it with the plastic cover that is later tied. This were the types that I was familiar with at that time. So, because of this, I started searching for alternatives because or else I would have to go with the dispos for her as well, meaning more money to be spent on diapers.

It took me some time to discover this new type of Cloth Diaper. What can I say.. they don't sell them in stores and most of them are imported, except for Freshbots that is. But even after founding out about this, it took me some time to decide to buy them. WHY?? why else if it wasn't for their PRICE.

When I first saw it... I was like.. man, that is very expensive. RM60 - 70 per piece. I'm talking about the pocket diapers.. because i was looking for something that can last through the night. Fitted diapers is quite 'leceh' for nighttime. So, it took me about 1 month to think about this and only considered of buying them after i'm convinced that this was the best solution for me. WHY?

My son was using MamyPoko XXL at night.. and this was the only diaper that works with my son at night. XL sized dispos are small and couldn't take all his pees.. and MamyPoko seems to absorbs more pees than the rest. On top of that, this was the most expensive diapers. It costs RM 35+ for 28 pieces. I only used this at night for him. During daytime, if he took his nap, I will use the cheap diaper brands.. like Carrefour, Fitty or Pureen's. So, when I found out about this, I was like.. let's give it a try, at least for him first since Husna has plenty of dispos to choose from that are cheap and size was not a problem for her. So we bought one XL sized pocket diaper with 4 different inserts. And walla..that costs us about RM90+. With this, we stopped buying MamyPoko diapers and during his daytime nap, I will just use the traditional lampin and fold it into the cheap diaper cover that you can buy in store (around RM10-13).

On top of that, I also bought one for Husna to be used at nighttime since those traditional lampin doesn't last that long. I got a one-sized pocket imported brand which was more expensive (at that time i didn't know about Freshbots) than the one sold by Freshbots. I also bought additional inserts to make sure that their diapers last longer. I've been doing this for 2+ months and I am satisfied.

They are easy to wash because the fleece/suede are stain resistant fabric. No need to scrub with brushes. Just wash it with your hand or you can even washing machined them. And hang them to dry.

It wasn't all pretty in the beginning.. I had some trouble with my son because there were few times that leakage occured. So I added more inserts and made sure that i tighten the settings for him when he wore them. Later, I also found out that he can actually fit into the Freshbots one size with using the largest setting. Even with Fuzzi Bunz, the size Large was too big for him, who's weighing 14+ kg and using MamyPoko XXL size. So, on the Fuzzi Bunz's scale, Medium size is the one that suits him. So you see how generous the sizing are for Cloth Diapers??
Also, I only use them when at home. When I travel I will use the dispos during the day and at night I will use these Pocket diapers.

You don't need to buy too many. It all depends on your budget. If you can afford to buy more, why not.. But if you're on a tight budget, then you can prioritize. When do you really need them?? I know that a lot of people uses those branded diapers at night, which can last longer. Lazy people like me doesn't want to be bothered at night to change diapers and sometime you probably missed the time to wake up to change the diapers. As a result, it's your baby who gets wet... Poor baby.. So, if you only need them at night, then 1 or 2 pieces is sufficient. Then you add more soakers, in case your baby is a heavywetter. This is my personal advice and experience. Different people may have a different story. So, think wise before buying! Don't rush into it..

Cloth Diaper Types

Posted by sayangkucomel at 11:17 PM 0 comments
There are 4 major types of Cloth Diaper:

1) PREFOLD

- Requires a wrap or a cover
- May require a fastener such as pins or a snappi
- Usually made of cotton, gauze, Birdseye flannel, hemp, or velour.
- This are made of fabric and is almost similar to the traditional
cloth diapers except that the middle part of it is a bit thicker

2) FITTED

- Requires a wrap or a cover
- Usually fastens with snaps or hook and loop (velcro), sometimes
a snappi or pins may be used.
- Outer and inner layers are not waterproof and may consist of
many different fabrics types.
- A doubler will increase absorbency.
- Usually has elastic and legs and back area.
- Made from a variety of materials: organic cotton, bamboo, hemp,
terry cloth, sherpa
- Example: Freshbots EASI Fitted

3) POCKET

- Does not requires a wrap or a cover - this feature is built in.
- Usually fastens with snaps or hook and loop (velcro)
- Outer layer is waterproof...usually made with PUL, Procare,
fleece, or wool.
- Requires and absorbent stuffer material to be placed in the
pocket before use.
- Usually has elastic and legs and back area.
- Example: Freshbots DryZ One-Size, Fuzzi Bunz

4) ALL-IN-ONE (AIO)

- Does not requires a wrap or a cover - this feature is built in.
- Usually fastens with snaps or hook and loop (velcro)
- Outer layer is waterproof...usually made with PUL, Procare,
fleece, or wool.
- A doubler will increase absorbency since it already has a soaker
built-in.
- Usually has elastic and legs and back area.

(source: diaperjungle.com)

Prefolds and Fitted diapers require the use of a diaper cover since their materials are not waterproof. Meanwhile, Pocket and AIO have outer layer that is waterproof. However, since AIO has its soaker sewn inside the pocket-like structure, it will take longer drying time. Whereas, the soakers/inserts in pocket diapers can be washed separately which result in a faster drying time.

There are 2 sizing options for Cloth Diapers (Excluding PREFOLDS):

1) MULTI-SIZE

This is when the diapers come in its individual sizes of S, M, L. Most of the types the diapers are only available in standard size. This is partly because the sizing of these cloth diapers are 'generous'. Unlike disposable diapers, where user tend to upgrade sizes quickly, the range of a specific cloth diaper size is bigger than what the dispos can cover. So, for example, if your child wears a size M dispos, he/she might still be on an S size with cloth diaper. Example: Fuzzi Bunz

2) ONE-SIZE

This is when the diaper can be adjusted to cater the 3 different sizes (S, M, L). This is usually done by adjusting the rise of the diaper through the use of snaps. For example, take a look at Freshbots DryZ One-Size. Aside from adjusting the waist, there are also method for adjusting the rise of diaper.

The advantage of One-size diapers are that they can be used for a long time, starting from the small setting until toddler. However, it may be bulky when placed on a small/medium setting, especially for pocket diapers. Sometimes, babies that are premature/newborn and large babies may not fit them and they might also outgrow the diapers faster than expected (if your baby is one of those chubby-typed babies :) ).

Akan Datang - Fuzzi Bunz !

Posted by sayangkucomel at 3:24 PM 0 comments
The New Fuzzi Bunz

New & Improved

Freshbots Diapers

Posted by sayangkucomel at 3:07 PM 0 comments
I am selling Freshbots Diapers and they are available for pickup in the Seberang Jaya, Penang area (somewhere near Carrefour, Taman Sutera to be exact). Online orders are accepted upon request and the customers are responsible for paying the additional shipping cost (RM5-7). Freshbots diapers are made in Malaysia.

The following items are in stock:

DRYZ Pocket OneSize (RM 69/each) :

baby blue, saturn blue, kelly green, periwinkle, raspberry, lavender, butter

Product Information:

Made from outer layer of waterproof PUL fabric, it has a pocket with openings at both end for easy insertion of soakers. The pocket is made from suedecloth / microfleece for that dry effect, leaving baby's bottom dry eventhough the soaker is wet.

There are 3 rows of snaps at the outer layer that will transform the diaper from small to medium to large sizes.

  • Small size - snap the top row button into the lowest row button.
  • Medium - snap the top row button into the middle row button.
  • Large size - leave button un-snap.

Available in a rainbow of exciting colours, perfect as part of your colourful baby layette.

2 soakers are included with each diaper: the small size is perfect for use on the smallest setting and large for use on the medium and large settings. For heavy wetter, use both the small and the large soakers together.

  • EASI All-In-One (RM 38/each) :

    Product Information

Fresh Bots is proud to introduce our own Special Fitted diaper. Our fitted diaper is basically an all-in-one diaper. The outer layer is made from cotton jersey with inner terry fabric. A hidden soaker and waterproof layer are sewn inside the diaper, giving you an all in one, EASI diapering experience. You may add a soaker to increase the absorbency of the diaper.

Although the diaper has a waterproof fabric inside, due to it being 100% cotton, we strongly recommend using a diaper cover such as Bummis, over the diaper when using during Night time and during long outing outside for a total leakproof experience.
